Frequently Asked Denture Questions

What is the difference between immediate and conventional dentures?
During your first dental procedure, Dr. Paul Mathew will remove any remaining diseased teeth. Since the healing process can take several weeks, you will be fitted with immediate, but temporary, dentures while your custom fitted dentures are being made. Your final set of dentures will be firmly fitted against your gums.

Will dentures make me look different?
Naturally! If you have been dealing with missing, diseased and broken teeth, chances are your face and jaw sag.  With a new set of dentures, it will improve your facial structure and give you a smile back, not to mention improving your overall dental health and making it easier to speak, eat, chew and swallow.

Will dentures change my speech?
Generally, speech improves with a full set of teeth. However, it may take a little practice to pronounce some words.

Will I be able to eat with dentures?
With practice you will eventually be able to return to your normal diet. But, until you are comfortable with your dentures, you may want to eat soft foods, take small bites, and always chew evenly on both sides to keep your dentures in place.

How do I care for my dentures?
Dentures are relatively delicate and can break easily, warp, or become discolored.  For basic care:

  • Handle dentures over a towel or sink filled with water
  • Brush with soft bristles and a non abrasive cleanser
  • Store in liquid to prevent drying out and warping
  • Never clean with bleach, to protect the natural color of the gum line
  • Keep away from pets and children
  • Keep your gums healthy with good oral hygiene

How often will they need replacing?
The answer differs for every patient. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain good oral hygiene and visit Dr. Mathew as often as he prescribes. He will make sure the dentures still fit properly. Additionally, he will make sure you are free of dental diseases like oral cancer.

If your teeth have lost their usefulness and cause discomfort, it is time to contact Exceptional Dentistry in Salem, New Hampshire. During your free complimentary consultation, Dr. Mathew will exam your overall dental health, and determine if dentures are the best option for restoring your overall oral health.
