An Experience with Sedation Dentistry

Salem, Brookline, Manchester, NH

It is not uncommon that I see patients who have some form of apprehension and fear about dental procedures. Usually, the dental phobic person has avoided regular dental maintenance and check-ups and, by the time I see them, they have accumulated a number of dental issues.

This is how I met David. David came to my office with his wife and I knew he was there only because his dental issues had increased in severity. His wife answered all my questions while David just sat there, eyes downcast. It was painful to watch his obvious discomfort. Not an ideal situation . yet I was certain that if I worked with David, I could help him overcome his anxiety. Why? Because I have a deep passion for dentistry and empathy that allows antsy people to relax and engage in their dental healthiness.

Well, David's wife and I worked up the treatment plan and scheduled David for a series of appointments. The first visit was uneventful, some cavities were addressed. David was uncommunicative and withdrawn; his wife the liaison for David. I have seen dread before but this was an extreme case.

The second visit went similarly, David stoic, his wife the gentle force behind his dental remediation. David's treatment plan was progressing nicely however David was still not fully present to his plan . . . more resigned than anything else.

The third visit was the dental implant, a more involved procedure than his other visits and I wondered how that would be for David. Would he show? How was he feeling? Did he have a clear picture of his dental goals? Or more importantly, could David be committed to his dental health?

At the assigned time, David appeared at the office, portable music player in hand and looking more relaxed than I have ever seen him before. And, David was solo! Sensing something had transpired, I asked him if he remembered that today was the dental implant day. David shrugged his shoulders and said yes which is why he brought the music player.

I was amazed at his nonchalant attitude and then David added "I trust you." David went from a guy who couldn't rein in his fear to someone who was committed to his dental health.

What a dramatic turn around for David! I am glad to report that David's treatment plan was a success and I can guarantee that his dental health is right where it should be.
