Frequently Asked Questions

Is tooth whitening safe?

At Exceptional Dentistry, your comfort is our first concern. Tooth whitening is a proven safe dental procedure, approved by the American Dental Association and the Federal Drug Administration, and used successfully to brighten millions of smiles. The only side effect from the procedure is temporary sensitivity to extreme temperatures, but this goes away in a few days. Of course, an individual evaluation with New Hampshire Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Paul Mathew is a wise idea before going ahead with any new dental treatment.

What are my tooth whitening options?

Tooth whitening is a very popular method for achieving a noticeable difference in your smile with almost instantaneous results. Whitening toothpastes and over-the-counter remedies offer only marginal results in comparison to professional results than can whiten and brighten your teeth up of 8 shades brighter.

To ensure optimal results, Dr. Mathew takes a two step approach:

  • Professional bleach application and laser whitening with Zoom!
  • Custom fitted bleaching trays for home use

In one brief dental visit, you will notice a major change. The home tooth bleaching trays will help you to maintain that brilliant new smile and offer the convenience of whitening your teeth whenever you begin to see a bit of dullness returning.

How long does the tooth whitening procedure take?

The entire procedure takes about an hour. The procedure begins by preparing your teeth, followed by about 45 minutes of bleaching. Dr. Mathew may recommend a cleaning prior to the whitening session.

How are my teeth actually whitened?

The active ingredient in Zoom’s whitening gel is hydrogen peroxide. As this is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin. The oxygen works to bleach stains without changing or harming the structure of the tooth. The Zoom! light activates the hydrogen peroxide for better surface penetration, increasing the effectiveness of the gel by 26% or more for an average improvement of up to eight shades.

Do I need a dental evaluation before I whiten my teeth?

Before teeth whitening begins, Dr. Mathew performs a thorough evaluation to ensure overall good dental health. If he discovers other dental issues that require attention, these may need correction before the whitening process can begin.

You offer take-home kits for tooth whitening--How do these differ from kits I get at the store?

Over the counter tooth whitening kits you get at the store are accompanied by trays that are designed to fit the average person's teeth. If your teeth are exactly average, you may be able to get good results from these kits. If your teeth are unique to you, you may find that the store-bought kits give uneven results that call attention to the discoloration of your teeth.

What about other forms of tooth whitening available?

Over the counter tooth whitening strips have been shown to be relatively ineffective because they cannot supply tooth whitening compound evenly to the teeth in concentrations and over time enough to be effective. Most whitening toothpastes contain harsh abrasives that can thin your tooth enamel, allowing the yellowish dentin within to show.

Am I a candidate for teeth whitening?

Unless other health issues preclude tooth whitening, the majority of patients are pleased with this almost instantaneous method for creating a dazzling smile. If you’ve tried to whiten your teeth with over-the-counter products to no avail, or are in any way dissatisfied with the color, whiteness or brightness of your smile, you are a likely candidate for teeth whitening.
